They tend to frown on companies trying to circumvent that particular app guideline. The overarching belief is that Apple isn’t particularly happy that Steam wants to be able to sell games to users without paying Apple’s 30% cut. We have clear guidelines that all developers must follow in order to ensure the App Store is a safe place for all users and a fair opportunity for all developers.

We put great effort into creating an App Store that provides the very best experience for everyone. We’ve discussed these issues with Valve and will continue to work with them to help bring the Steam experience to iOS and AppleTV in a way that complies with the store’s guidelines.

Unfortunately, the review team found that Valve’s Steam iOS app, as currently submitted, violates a number of guidelines around user generated content, in-app purchases, content codes, etc. We would love for Valve’s games and services to be on iOS and AppleTV. We care deeply about bringing great games to all of our users on the App Store. Thank you for your email and being a customer of Apple products and the App Store. The initial reasoning was a very vague “business conflicts with app guidelines” and though clarification has now been offered, it’s hardly any more helpful.Īpple’s Phil Schiller responded to at least a few users questioning the ban with an incredibly vague statement. The app was set to launch on iOS recently, but Apple had a change of heart and rejected the app after initially approving it. There’s an Android beta on now, allowing users to access and play their Steam games remotely via their mobile device. Plus, I guess, the Steam Link software approach could potentially cause performance compromises - though the system has actually proved pretty effective in its previously launched hardware iteration.Valve has been working to bring Steam Link capabilities to mobile devices for some time now. You will, of course, need to sort yourself out with a Steam or Apple MFi joystick if you want to play games through your Apple TV. But Steam’s recent development of a software version of the Link system that piggy backs it onto third-party TVs, mobile and set-top boxes has suddenly made the Apple TV a much more potentially interesting gadget for gamers than it ever was before. Steam Link boxes have been around to offer the same service for well over two years. This sort of functionality isn’t new in itself, of course.

This means, of course, that you can then use your Apple TV to deliver your PC and Mac games onto the big-screen television you’ve presumably got it hooked up to. Adding this tvOS app - which is set to become available on May 21st - to your Apple TV will allow you to stream games to it from any PC or Mac on your network that has Steam installed.
